Eastern Coachwhip [Masticophis flagellum flagellum Shaw, 1802]

This pictured specimen, estimated to be 4-5 feet in length, was one of two discovered seeking shelter beneath a discarded truck tire in sandy scrub habitat about along State Road 21 about 0.5 miles north of Keystone Heights in Clay County, Florida on 5/6/2013. When approached closer, the duo immediately departed the area at a very high rate of speed.
