Ventridens ligera (Say, 1821) Globose Dome In Yellow Jacket Nest

Jeffrey Mattingly photographed this disturbed subterranean Eastern Yellow Jacket (Vespula maculifrons) nest replete with snails in Cherokee Park, Louisville, Jefferson County, Kentucky on July 13, 2021. A variety of mammals have been known to attack and destroy Yellow Jacket nests in order to eat the wasp grubs, eggs, and even adults. While not firmly identified, the snails present at the nest are believed to be Ventridens ligera (Say, 1821). It's uncertain whether the snails were at or present in the nest at the time of its destruction or arrived later being attracted by something which was unearthed during the nest attack.
