Found near a small decomposing log adjacent to the roadside swale, Commercial Circle, downtown Keystone Heights, Clay County, Florida, 8/21/2020. During the past seven years this reporter has spent at least a hundred hours surveying the molluscan fauna of Clay County and this is only slug that has ever been found in this hot and dry habitat. Because of the slugs large size and the unusual habitat in which it was found (hot sandy area with cactus), the slug was mailed to Dr. David Robinson, USDA/APHIS at the Academy of Natural Sciences in Philadelphia, who dissected the specimen. The dissection confirmed that it was in fact a Leidyula floridana that it was full of eggs. Specimen USDA 131336. |
