Eastern Diamondback Rattlesnake [Crotalus adamanteus]

This large specimen was encountered near a petroleum pipeline adjacent to a forested area on the east side of Evergreen Avenue in downtown Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida on 7/2/2021. The serpent was estimated to be about four and a half feet in length. Following the encounter the snake proceeded to execute a slow retreat into the forested area, but when prompted with a long handled rake, assumed a defensive striking pose as shown below and began to rattle vigorously. Further interaction with the snake failed to elicit any further action to include fleeing or striking. This is not a common species and is only the third specimen ever seen by this reporter in over twenty years of molluscan field surveys.
