Aquatic center lake Pomacea with misshapen abbreviated operculum

The illustrated 78 mm. specimen, with no apparent operculum,  was collected from the aquatic park lake on 11/15/2006. Later, when the animal was extracted from the shell, it was found to have a hard growth attached to the front portion of the foot (bottom three images) - apparently representing the snail's original operculum or a later attempt to regenerate a lost operculum. A specimen with a similar misshapen abbreviated operculum had previously been found in St. Marys, Georgia on 7/21/2006.

Interestingly, a juvenile Channeled Apple Snail with no apparent operculum was previously collected in Duval County, Florida; was taken into captivity, and subsequently grew a normal operculum (See: Paper mill pond Pomacea with no operculum).
