Pinecrest Hammock 55 (A)

This is a cross section of the typical barbouri found in the natural hammock in the 1930's.  In addition, lighter-colored shells were found throughout the hammock while even "bluer" shells were concentrated in smaller areas.  In a project that would come to excite snailing enthusiasts for decades to come, Jones and others used private plants to selectively breed strains of the Pinecrest Hammock 55 shells with startling results in color intensity.  The results included the famed "Blue Barbouri", a shell often cited as one of the most beautiful Florida Liguus.     Some workers would call this form castaneozonatus and they might be correct, depending on where you draw the line. In this case, the shells have blackish borders above and below the banding, a feature Pilsbry and other workers used to differentiate the two forms. (MWJ)
