Atrina serrata (G. B. Sowerby I, 1825) Sawtooth Penshell In Situ |
This massive specimen (measuring over 310 mm. in length and of world record size) was found buried in muddy sand at Vilano Beach, St. Johns County, Florida during a minus tide on 4/16/2007. Considerable excavating was necessary to remove the specimen from the substrate. Although not usually found in situ, the species is commonly found washed ashore after hurricanes and northeasters - sometimes in very large numbers. |
