Liguus fasciatus Müller 1774 Florida Tree Snail Shell Damage

This Liguus fasciatus, which had sustained traumatic shell damage in the past probably as a result of being blown out of a tree, was found and photographed by Robert Pilla in Matheson Hammock (Coral Gables), Miami-Dade County, Florida during late August, 2008. As is evidenced by the image, the snail was able repair the damage by depositing shell material from the inside thus sealing the two holes. Note the two microscopic shells, possibly juvenile Polygyra cereolus (Mühlfeld, 1816) [Southern Flatcoil], present the dorsum.
