West Indian Manatee [Trichechus manatus latirostris] |
| This large female manatee was photographed by Dennis Frank when he discovered it stranded on a mud flat behind his home on Terrapin Creek, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida on 6/16/2011. Local residents and Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission personnel managed to guide the wayward female to deeper water and she subsequently swam away. However, two days later a deceased female manatee was discovered in the same general area and is believed to be the same specimen. |
