Egg Clutch On Liquor Bottle |
|
Persistent high temperatures in the mid-90's combined with a lack of precipitation reduced the drainage ditch just south of the concrete box culvert to but a shallow, narrow, vegetation choked version of its former state. The practical effect of this was to deny the Pomacea canaliculata access to suitable structure on which to deposit their egg clutches. While it appeared that some of the females actually left the confines of the ditch to find suitable nearby locations, one enterprising female solved the problem by depositing her clutch on a partially submerged liquor bottle which was photographed on 8/21/2005. The floating bottle has been present in the ditch for quite some time but had not been pressed into service previously. |
