Pomacea canaliculata Striped Specimens

Pomacea canaliculata from the three individual locations in Duval County where they are found (St. Augustine Road, Baker Skinner Park and Hatton Chase) are remarkably similar in appearance. All of the snails examined from St. Augustine Road and Baker Skinner park (some 700 specimens) had an animal that was uniformly yellow in coloration - without a single exception. Likewise a vast majority of the snails from Hatton Chase exhibited that exact same animal coloration. However, occasionally a specimen with an orange colored animal was found (shown below, left mating with a normally colored specimen) and rarely a specimen with a striped shell and a dark somewhat mottled animal (some examples shown below). A striped shell has never been observed in the other two populations. The reason for this difference in shell/animal coloration in the Hatton Chase population is currently not known.
