Amphidromus banski Butot, 1954 |
From Prince Island, or "Pulau Panaitan" as it's known in Indonesian, a small island off the west coast of Java in the Sunda Straits. The entire population is sinistral. Ground color is yellow in about 90% of the specimens seen and white in the remaining 10%. Pure yellow shells make up perhaps 10% of the population, the remainder having dark pigmentation that looks rather olive colored when on the yellow background and decidedly blue on a white background. Size ranges from about 40 to 50mm. Laidlaw and Solem place both Amphidromus banksi and A. enganoensis within the A. palaceus group. Althouth both Amphidromus banksi and A. enganoensis are similar, neither species fits into the A. palaceus group. The normal coloration is show below (top three specimens) as well as the blue color form (bottom single specimen). |
