St. Augustine At The Lake Apartment Homes, Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida

Acting on a tip from a fellow enthusiast, Brian Marshall, on 10/10/2009 this reporter visited an apparent large man made lake adjacent to St. Augustine at the Lake Apartment Homes, immediately north of Losco Road at 11001 Old St. Augustine Road, where Brian had recently reported finding evidence of a Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) [Florida Applesnail] population while out exploring.

Upon arrival my arrival, Brian's observations were quickly confirmed when a modest number of Pomacea egg clutches were evident on three shoreline concrete structures on the west side of the lake immediately east of the apartments. However, no actual Pomacea paludosa shells could be located. During Brian's earlier visit on 10/3/2009 he reported finding two empty Pomacea shells along the shoreline on the east side of the lake. Based on preliminary observations, it would appear that the lake's Pomacea paludosa population is relatively small - probably due in no small part to the lack of shallow water and  structures suitable for depositing egg clutches.
