Atrina serrata (G. B. Sowerby I, 1825) Sawtooth Penshell Symbiont

The rough seas associated with the passing of Hurricane Isabel during the 3rd week of September, 2003 caused a large number of live Atrina serrata to be washed onto the beaches of Duval County in Northeast Florida. Examination of these moribund specimens indicated that virtually all of them contained small (10-15 mm) Pinnotheres maculatus Say, 1818 [Mussel Crab], a symbiont.  The specimens below were found on the beach at Mayport Naval Station nearly a week after the storms passing.
