Mesodon thyroidus (Say, 1817) White-lip Globe From The Flood Plain Of Little Black Creek

Pictured below are some of the Mesodon specimens collected from a small portion of the flood plain of Little Black Creek at the County Road 220 bridge, Middleburg, Clay County, Florida between January-April, 2022. A vast majority of the shells were empty and found floating in the flood waters. Most of the live specimens were up trees/palmettos to a height of 10 feet above ground (water level). Some freshly deceased specimens were found in the water and likely fell out of the trees and subsequently drowned. The species has a propensity for tree climbing, especially in times of  high water. Even when flooding is not present, as many as 10 live snails have been found on a single large tree (4/21/2022) with additional live specimens on the muddy substrate at the tree base. Only intact adult shells were retained.
