Florida Cottonmouth [Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti]

This specimen was discovered well concealed under vegetation in Sawmill Slough on the campus of the University of North Florida, southeastern Duval County, Florida on 5/10/2008. To facilitate photography, a small limb was employed to part the vegetation at which point the serpent perceived a threat and proceeded to repeatedly display its cotton mouth before slowly crawling off in search of a more peaceful location.
