Apoecus phaedusoides (Thiele, 1931) |

|
Ena (?Heudiella) phaedusoides
was proposed as a replacement name for Buliminus clausiliaeformis
Bavay and Dautzenberg 1912 (p. 27-28; pl. 4, figs. 4-6 [images above])
non Möllendorff, 1901 by Thiele (1931: 521; fig. 611). Zilch
(1959: 187) placed this taxon in Coccoderma Möllendorff, 1901
[Type Buliminus granulatus Möllendorff, 1901 OD (Schileyko, 1998:
194-5); see image of lectotype from Yen (1939: pl. 7, fig. 14)] non
Zittel, 1887 [Pisces: a Coelocanth!], which is plausible assignment but
an unavailable generic name. Schileyko (1998: 212) states this species
could be a Pseudonapaeus Westerlund, 1887 [Type Buliminus
asiaticus von Martens, 1881 SD Lindholm, 1922; see image from
Schileyko (1998: 197; fig. 243A)] or Mirus Albers, 1850 [Type
Bulimus cantori Philippi, 1844 monotypy; see image from Yen (1939:
pl. 7, fig. 1)]. Once assigned to Heudiella Annandale, 1924 [Type
H. oliveriana Annandale, 1924 OD; see Annandale's type figure
taken from Schileyko (1998: 212; fig.262) above] from Chekiang, China,
that taxon has been considered a juvenile clausiliid (Nordsieck, 2000)
and is now sunken into Macrophaedusa
Möllendorff, 1883 <https://molluscabase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1375420>;
thus Heudiella is not a suitable placement for the taxon
under consideration. Only recently has it found a home in Apoecus
[Type Buliminus
colonus
Möllendorff, 1895] according to
<https://molluscabase.org/aphia.php?p=taxdetails&id=1375431>
(editor Páll-Gergely, 2019), which appears to be supported by
Köhler et.
al. (2016). The genus is an almost exclusively dextral group with
about thirty species spread from the SE Asian mainland into New Guinea.
As a final testament to the elusive higher taxonomy of this snail,
Schileyko (ibid: 182) placed Apoecus in the Pachnodidae (with a
"?") and continued: "It is possible that the genus is an aberrant
representative of the Camaenidae."
