Euglandina rosea (Férussac, 1821) Rosy Wolfsnail - Very Large Specimen

This broken 83.5 mm. specimen was found partially buried in the mud adjacent to the roadside swale on the east side of US-1 about 3.1 miles northwest of International Golf Parkway, St. Johns County, Florida on January 12, 2020. It appeared that the shell had been buried in the substrate but had been partially excavated by rooting wild hogs which are common in the area. Upon removal of the mud from the shell aperture, two broken pieces of the shell were found. This suggests that at least part of the shell damage was caused by a large tractor used for mowing the area but some damage being caused prior to that due predation by a mammal cannot be entirely discounted.
