Campeloma floridense (Call, 1886) Family Portrait |
|
The 24 mm. adult specimen (pictured below, left) was collected on 10/30/2005 in a small ditch/creek (Bennett Branch) in southeastern Duval County, Florida. When the animal was removed, the eight illustrated juvenile specimens (measuring about 2.5-3 mm.) were found inside. Five of the seven Campeloma collected in the ditch were found to be carrying young with the most found in a single specimen being eleven. Members of the family Viviparidae brood their young internally and therefore produce living young instead of laying eggs. |
