Campeloma floridense (Call, 1886) Family Portrait |
The 21 mm. adult specimen (pictured below) was collected on 12/4/2006 in Red Bay Branch in the Arlington section of Jacksonville, Duval County, Florida. When the animal was removed, the ten illustrated juvenile specimens were found inside. A larger second adult specimen (28 mm.) collected at the same time was likewise found to be gravid - with five juveniles present. Members of the family Viviparidae brood their young internally and therefore produce living young instead of laying eggs. |
