Century-old Stenotrema angellum Hubricht, 1958 Specimen In Disguise

Identification of this species was extremely difficult until the work of Daniel Dourson (2011: 182), who illustrated the shell for the first time and pointed out diagnostic features (weak interdenticular sinus, shallow basal notch, relatively small fulcrum, and bluntly angulate periphery) vs. S. stenotrema, its closest apparent relative. Hubricht (1958: 71) stressed the depressed shape and periostracal details, which are variable and often obsolete features respectively (see previous page for this distinction).
