Solariorbis depressus Olsson and Harbison, 1953 Fossil

   Lower Pinecrest beds, Upper Tamiami Formation, Sarasota County, Florida. SEMs produced in collaboration with Dr. Ann Heatherington, Dept. of Geology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL. This species differs from that of Rehder by its lower profile, bluntly angulate periphery (lentiform profile), and finer spiral sculpture. The less depressed Delphinula depressa I. Lea, 1833, the type of Solariorbis Conrad, 1865 by original designation and known from the Eocene of Claiborne, AL, may be ancestral. S. blakei is likely a Quaternary descendant
