Florida Cottonmouth [Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti]

This feisty little guy put on quite a display when this scribe nearly stepped on him while searching for  freshwater mollusks in Sawmill Slough on the campus of the University of North Florida in southeastern Duval County, Florida on August 12, 2006. Later when prodded with a stick, he left little doubt that he meant business and that this reporter was lucky to have spotted him just in the nick of time. Probably every veteran freshwater mollusk collector in Florida has at least one story to tell about an encounter with the venomous Florida Cottonmouth.
