Pinecrest Hammock 88

Pinecrest Hammock 88 clenchi was one of the two parent shells Archie Jones used to engineer spectacular "hybrids" margaretae and beardi, two forms named by Jones in 1979.  The other parent shell was Pinecrest Hammock 11 lucidovarius. Pinecrest Hammock 88 ornatus are very different than form ornatus from the Upper Keys. Due to the atypical presence of a more liver-colored shell with many green lines,  some collectors give PC 88 ornatus the unofficial name "pseudo-ornatus". Form "pseudo-ornatus" occurred rarely in some other Pinecrest hammocks, sporadically in some Collier County hammocks, and was also present in the old days of Brickell Hammock.     Large and beautiful shells were created in food rich plants. These shells were grown by Winte from Pinecrest Hammock 88 parentage. Note the differences in natural hammock clenchi vs. the planted shells. (MWJ)
