Florida Cottonmouth [Agkistrodon piscivorus conanti]

Probably every veteran freshwater mollusk collector in Florida has at least one story to tell about an encounter with the venomous Florida Cottonmouth. The experience of this reporter is, that while the species is commonly encountered, getting close enough for photography can be a real challenge. As is illustrated below, sometimes getting the requisite photograph requires going above and beyond the call of duty and entering the snake's habitat and effecting a capture. That technique was employed by Jim Duby, Land Manager of the Seminole County Natural Lands Program, during an outing at the Bicentennial Youth Park in De Land on 5/13/2006.
