Daedalochila peninsulae (Pilsbry, 1940) On Old St. Augustine Road In Duval County, Florida |
|||
During a field survey on 6/6/2010, land snail enthusiast Brian Marshall discovered a population of Daedalochila peninsulae in the roadside swale just west of the bridge over the headwaters of Julington Creek on Old St. Augustine Road (GPS: 30.08405N 081.33268W - WGS-84 Datum). In addition, during the same visit, Brian discovered a population of Daedalochila auriculata (Say, 1818) Ocala Liptooth at the same location. This reporter and Harry G. Lee visited the site the same date also found empty shells of both species. However, despite several follow-up visits over the next 12 days, a living Daedalochila peninsula remained elusive. Finally on 6/18/2010 Brian discovered a single living specimen in vegetation just east of the Chevron gas station sign (now "Royalty Express" gas station" ) shown in the image below (see page two). Additionally, Brian found a single empty D. peninsulae shell in proximity to a retention pond behind the gas station - a find that indicates that the D. peninsulae may inhabit a much larger area than was initially believed. Two additional empty shells were found in the same area during a follow-up visit the next day. | |||
