Atrina serrata (G. B. Sowerby I, 1825) Sawtooth Penshell In Situ

This massive specimen (measuring over 310 mm. in length and of world record size) was found buried in muddy sand at Vilano Beach, St. Johns County, Florida during a minus tide on 4/16/2007. Considerable excavating was necessary to remove the specimen from the substrate. Although not usually found in situ, the species is commonly found washed ashore after hurricanes and northeasters - sometimes in very large numbers.
