Busycotypus canaliculatus (Linnaeus, 1758) Living Specimens |
At Mayport Naval Station in Duval County, Florida Busycotypus canaliculatus is frequently the most common whelk species found on the beach. The group illustrated below (which includes two Busycon perversum (Linnaeus, 1758)) represents about half of the specimens found on an approximately 200 meter long section of the beach on September 5, 2006. While 75-80 mm. specimens such as those illustrated are very common, fully adult specimens are rare and seldom found on open Atlantic beaches within the county. Following the portrait, all the specimens were returned to the hard sand substrate where they were initially found. |
