Stewartia floridana (Conrad, 1833) Florida Lucine

This lucine is a familiar Gulf of Mexico (GOM) endemic, known to live in anoxic substrates under shallow water from Florida Bay to Texas. Nonetheless, the provenance of this 36 mm. right valve is unimpeachable. This is not the first time Gulf of Mexico endemic, e.g., Solenosteira cancellata (Conrad, 1846), has turned up on our beaches; see Lee (2009: 108). For a discussion of the GOM fauna vs. that of Florida's First Coast see Lee (2010).
