Pomacea paludosa (Say, 1829) Florida Applesnail Juveniles

These juveniles (about 4 mm.) are less than ten days old and were hatched from egg capsules obtained from Lake Oneida, University of North Florida, Duval Co., Florida. They were then placed in an aquarium at the photographer's residence. Here they are shown feeding on fresh iceberg lettuce, which they are fed once a day. When the lettuce is introduced into the aquarium, they are immediately aware of its presence. Since lettuce floats, it's fortunate that Applesnails can float at will (both adults and juveniles), and they simply float to the surface to get to the lettuce and begin feeding. Photographed on 6/9/2005.
