Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) In Southwestern Duval County

Acting on information provided by Larry Connor, Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, on June 14 and 17, 2012 this reporter visited a series of lakes/retention ponds in southwestern Duval County just west of Blanding Boulevard where Pomacea canaliculata had been reported previously by a reliable source. The source had reported that the snails were present in five water bodies (numbers 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 on the map below). During the visit this reporter confirmed that the snails were in fact present in the four of the five and discovered they were also present in five other locations (numbers 1 - Mulligan Drive; 6, 7 and 8 - Plantation Bay Drive; 10 - Ironstone Drive).  Number 9 on the map, previously reported to have snails was not surveyed due to difficulty in accessing the water body. However, five addition water bodies (designated by red squares on the map) were surveyed and no evidence of Pomacea was seen. With the exception of lake number 3 on the map (also known as Plantation Lake), which had a large thriving Pomacea canaliculata population, none of the water bodies appeared to have more than a token snail population.
