Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck, 1822) Along US-301 North Of Baldwin In Far Western Duval County

During a terrestrial snail survey in far western Duval County on February 14, 2014, this reporter discovered a population of Pomacea canaliculata in a small drainage system along US-301 exactly one mile north of the intersection of US-301 and US-90 in downtown Baldwin, Florida. The address for the site is 900 US-301 North, Baldwin, Florida. The snails were initially found in a small creek/drainage ditch which flows east to west under the roadway but further investigation determined that the snails were also present in two much more modest drainage ditches which fed into the creek/ditch. Living specimens, recently deceased snails, and empty shells were present in large numbers. Based upon the size of some of specimens (largest specimen found) and the number present, the Pomacea have apparently inhabitated this drainage system for a number of years.
