Daedalochila sp. aff. bicornuta (Pilsbry, 1900) Two-horn Liptooth Variant B Egg Clutch |
|
This egg clutch
was found under vegetation in rich black soil along an east to west
flowing creek just south the intersection of County Road 326 (Gulf
Hammock) and US-19 in Levy County, Florida on 12/14/2011. Six live
adult live specimens were found within inches of the
eggs. The eggs pictured above were but part of two separate egg
clutches found in the one small area (see: Daedalochila
sp. aff. bicornuta Variant A Egg Clutches).
The presence of the two egg clutches and six adult specimens within
the small area suggests an egg laying aggregation. A separate egg
clutch, similarly situated in rich black soil along the creek, was
found some 15 feet away with two adult Daedalochila
present within inches. The eggs are very similar in appearance to those of
Daedalochila auriculata (a similarly sized species) but looked
to be somewhat smaller in diameter. See:
Daedalochila auriculata Eggs And
Apparent Parent
While Daedalochila egg clutches are seldom found in the field, it's interesting to note that to date they have only been found during December and January. |
