Euglandina rosea (Férussac, 1821) Rosy Wolfsnail Cannibalism

Found in the roadside swale on the west side of US-1 about 3.3 miles northwest of International Golf Parkway, St. Johns County, Florida on 3/20/2021. When initially discovered it was believed that the pair were engaged in mating activity. However, upon closer examination it was obvious that the larger specimen was in fact devouring the smaller of the two with very little, if any, of the snail body remaining. The cannibalism victim measured 48.0 mm. Cannibalism in the US-1 Euglandina population is not uncommon. The same date the empty shells of two additional victims were found - both of which were not present where found some 48 hours earlier. The nail polish mark on the spire is part of an experiment being conducted to ascertain the size of the population of Euglandina as well as their movements within the study area.
